A leather vest is the most-worn piece of riding gear there is: on the bike, at the rally and everywhere in between. A good fit makes all the difference. Too loose and it flaps at speed. Too tight and you can't reach the bars comfortably or wear a layer underneath. Here's how to get it right.
In this guide: How to measure · How a vest should fit · Sizing for layers · Big & tall · Questions
How to measure for a leather vest
- Chest: wear a T-shirt or whatever you usually ride in. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms and across your shoulder blades. Keep it level and snug, not tight.
- Waist (belly): measure around the fullest part of your stomach. If it's bigger than your chest, use this number when choosing your size.
- Check the chart: compare your measurement with the size chart on the product page. Sizes vary by style and maker, so don't assume your size from another brand will match.
Measuring alone is tricky, so ask someone to help or use a vest you already own. Lay it flat and measure across the chest from armpit to armpit, then double that number.
How should a leather vest fit?
- Chest: snug, so it closes without pulling across the chest or the snaps straining.
- Back: lies flat across your shoulder blades when you reach forward for the bars, without riding up.
- Length: reaches about your belt line. Club-style vests are usually a little shorter, and some styles run longer.
- Arm holes: big enough to move freely without gaping open.
Real leather relaxes a little and shapes to your body as you wear it. Choose a vest that closes comfortably now instead of buying small and hoping it stretches.
Sizing for layers
If you ride in cool weather and want to wear a hoodie, flannel or jacket under your vest, measure over that layer or go up one size. Many vests have side laces or adjustment straps that let you fine-tune the fit for summer and fall.
| How you'll wear it | Size advice |
|---|---|
| Over a T-shirt only | Your measured size |
| Over a flannel or light hoodie | Measure over that layer, or go up one size |
| Over a jacket | Go up one size, and check the chest measurement on the chart |
| Between sizes | Pick the larger size if the vest has no side adjustment |
Big & tall riders
Many of our vests come in extended sizes, some up to 6XL and beyond. Sizes vary by style, so check the size list on each product page. If a vest you already own is a little snug, vest extenders add a few inches across the front without buying a new vest.

Leather, denim or textile?
Leather vests give the most wind and abrasion resistance, and they last for years with basic care. Denim and textile vests are lighter for hot weather. Not sure which hide to choose? Read Buffalo vs. Cowhide: Which Leather Is Better for Riding Gear?
Common questions
Do leather vests stretch?
A little. Leather relaxes with wear, especially at the chest and shoulders, but it won't go up a full size.

Yes. Leather vests are made for patches. We sew patches in our stores, and you can browse our patches. Call (770) 483-1060 for pricing.
